Decluttering Before Moving: Where Do You Even Start?
Decluttering Before Moving: Where Do You Even Start?
One of the most overwhelming parts of moving is realizing just how much “stuff” we have collected over the years. Whether you are downsizing, preparing to sell your home, or simply moving into a new space, decluttering before moving can make the entire process feel less stressful and much more manageable.
The good news is you do not have to do everything all at once. Small steps and simple systems can make a huge difference.
As a Wichita KS Realtor and owner of Design with Jen, I help homeowners simplify the moving process through organizing, decluttering, staging, and home preparation support. Here are some of my favorite tips for getting started when decluttering before a move.
Start Earlier Than You Think
One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting until the last few weeks before moving to begin decluttering.
Sorting through years of belongings takes time, especially when emotions and memories are attached to items. Starting early allows you to:
- make thoughtful decisions
- avoid feeling rushed
- reduce stress
- spread tasks out into manageable steps
Even 15–30 minutes a day can create noticeable progress over time.
Start With the Easy Areas First
Trying to begin with the most emotional spaces can quickly feel overwhelming. Instead, start with simpler areas like:
- junk drawers
- bathrooms
- linen closets
- storage bins
- pantry items
Quick wins help build momentum and confidence before tackling harder spaces.
Use the “Keep, Donate, Toss” Method
One of the easiest ways to simplify decluttering is by creating three basic categories:
- Keep
- Donate
- Toss
This keeps decision-making simpler and helps prevent piles from building up all over the house.
If you are unsure about certain items, create a small “maybe” box and revisit it later.
Be Honest About What You Actually Use
A helpful question to ask yourself is:
“Would I pack, move, unpack, and make space for this in my next home?”
If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go.
Many people hold onto items out of guilt, obligation, or “just in case” thinking. Downsizing and moving often create a great opportunity to simplify and focus on what truly adds value to daily life.
Sentimental Items Can Be the Hardest
Photos, children’s keepsakes, inherited items, and memorabilia are often the most emotional categories to sort through.
Remember:
- you do not have to keep everything to preserve memories
- taking photos of meaningful items can help
- keeping a few special treasures often matters more than keeping everything
Give yourself grace with sentimental belongings and work through them slowly.
Decluttering Helps Your Home Show Better
If you are preparing your home for sale, decluttering is one of the best things you can do before photos and showings.
Decluttered homes tend to:
- feel larger
- look cleaner
- photograph better
- feel less distracting to buyers
- help buyers emotionally connect to the space
Simple, organized spaces often make a much stronger impression.
Packing Becomes MUCH Easier
Decluttering before packing means:
- fewer boxes
- less stress
- less to unpack later
- lower moving costs
- a cleaner fresh start in your next home
Most people are surprised by how freeing it feels once they begin letting go of unnecessary items.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Decluttering and moving can feel physically and emotionally exhausting, especially during major life transitions.
As a Wichita KS Realtor and owner of Design with Jen, I help homeowners with:
- organizing
- downsizing
- decluttering
- staging
- packing and unpacking
- preparing homes for sale
My goal is to help make the process feel calmer, smoother, and less overwhelming from start to finish.
If you are thinking about moving, downsizing, or preparing your Wichita home for sale, I would love to help guide you through the process.
